On February 10, 2019, the 32nd Summit of the African Union was held in Ethiopia. Numerous interventions by heads of state and decision-makers have declared the urgency of better investment and efficient practices in the health sector. This will enable people to benefit from better health-care and access to care for the diseases that are most prevalent on the African continent.

H.E. Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda and Executive Chairman of the African Union, in view of the ODD objectives set for the 2030 agenda, underlines the importance of greater equity investments by African governments and international partners through more concrete and efficient actions in the health sector. By boosting this system, people will benefit from better care and a better quality of life.

For H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, President of the African Union Commission, there is a state of emergency. Current investments and health infrastructure are failing to meet needs. It warns of insufficient local investment in the health sector and advocates for an improvement of the health system through a stronger focus on diseases that cause the highest mortality rates and decrease in human capital.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the public and private sectors, and donor countries, to make a commitment to provide assistance of up to US$200 million to stop epidemics and provide universal health coverage for all.
