THE KIGALI SUMMIT ANNOUNCEMENT
On 27th January in Kigali, the Government of Rwanda announced that it will host a global Summit on malaria and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) on the eve of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in June 2020.
Simply named “The Kigali Summit”, this high-level Summit will be a unique opportunity to galvanize renewed progress and accelerated action against malaria and push for the elimination of NTDs, helping prevent unnecessary death and suffering.
The proposal is for a one-day high visibility Summit with support from global malaria and NTD partners, engaging and showcasing global leadership hosted at one of Kigali’s most impressive venues. One day to focus on what it will take to drive and deliver near and long-term progress against malaria and NTDs with first opportunity for Heads of State and Government to come together to review cross-Commonwealth progress towards this goal.
The Kigali Summit would leverage and maximize this vital moment to renew political attention, mobilize national, international and private sector investment, and deliver the tangible actions needed.

Impact Sante Afrique also took this opportunity to deepen its synergies with CSOs in Rwanda. New opportunities for collaboration around the Kigali Summit have since been under discussion.
A webinar on the role that civil society can play in such an event was subsequently proposed on Friday 7 February 2020.
